"New" Avenger Voyager Is Not Kobik, She Is Valerie Vector
Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort has given a long interview with Newsarama regarding Avengers #675 going weekly for No Surrender.
He tells us all that the story begins with the Earth having been taken elsewhere, which does sound a bit Doctor Who Series 4 — remember the episode The Stolen Earth? Tom Brevoort might, saying:
"The inciting event is that the Earth has been stolen. Everyone wakes up on Monday morning and the Earth is not where it's supposed to be – it's been purloined and taken elsewhere."
Rather than Daleks, The Avengers will have to face Thanos's Black Order and the Lethal Legion.
As for Voyager, a new character who suddenly appeared on the Avengers founding statue as if she has always been there, Brevoort says she is "the most important character in the Marvel Universe that you don't remember — but you will. And you'll remember her by the time Avengers #676 comes out, the second part of No Surrender." And her name? Valerie Vector.
"There are clues in Marvel Legacy #1. There are clues in the promo image that Alex Ross painted that's on the back of the lenticular variant and will be seen on a lot of books moving forward, where she's included with the founding Avengers on their statue."
And recogising some speculation about the character after the end of Secret Empire, Brevoort said "I think there's no reason not to tell you that Kobik has no connection to Voyager whatsoever." Oh, and: "I can say pretty definitively that Avengers: No Surrender is designed to create a big, apocalyptic finish for the current incarnation of the team and lead to the next iteration of the Avengers." And we could expect the weekly Avengers run to go beyond 16 issues — and see X-Men and Defenders join the approach.
