Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, 25th March 2018: "A Surprisingly Strong Week of Sales"

This is the Top 10 Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait to the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

It's Batman week. So Batman tops… almost every retailer's chart. Predictable at the top, less so at the bottom as Monstress makes it in.

Not a bad week. Thanos blew out the door even with the increase I had on it due to the previous two issues blowing out of here. Typical week of Batman taking the top spot. Superman did good. People are very nervous about Bendis coming on to the title. Brave and the Bold #2 sold out already. People are digging the limited series. Green Lanterns still sells even after 43 issues and managed to make it into our top ten.

Batman returns to the top spot this week at FFF, but Donny Cates is the real MVP of our Top Ten bestsellers. Babyteeth, Thanos and Doctor Strange Damnation were all in the Top Ten this week, with Babyteeth and Thanos at #2 and #3. Damnation was a little lower at #9, but it's still holding interest. Speaking of, Avengers is still slouching along selling well enough to break into the Top Ten on a weekly basis. Mighty Thor sold very well this week, making it to #5, mostly thanks to the Artgerm variant which we sold at cover price. A major death will always add a few more sales to a book and adding a cover by a needle moving hot artist certainly helps.

Amazing Spider-Man is still killing it. We managed to get our hands on a few more copies of #796 and sold enough to have it make the Top Twenty at #15, outselling Star Wars (which had it's worst week ever placing at the very end of the Top Twenty) and numerous other new releases. People are hyped over the new arc and the lead up to #800 and every issue until then will be a sure hit. Outcast has dropped significantly. While it still managed to make the Top Twenty at #18, it just isn't holding readers like some other books from Hickman.

Batman once again wins the week in sales. Avengers has seen an upswing in sales thanks to the Hulk returning.

It was a surprisingly strong week of sales, considering the wonky weather. Marvel made huge gains with Thor & Thanos, beating all challengers except Batman. I still don't have a read on the ceiling for Thanos… we keep increasing our orders and we keep selling out. If the rumored Cosmic Ghost Rider series picks up where this leaves off, I imagine it'll be a seismic success. Donny Cates is definitely the hottest writer since Tom King exploded on Batman.

This was a good week for Marvel, with three titles in our top 5 sellers–Mighty Thor #705 (our bestseller, of course), Runaways #7, and Thanos #17. On the other side of things, we only had one DC title crack the top 10, Batman #43.

This wasn't a particularly flashy week, but we had a lot of meat-and-potatoes titles hitting the shelves. As usual Batman is well-represented: covering ground from his main book to team up books like BRAVE & THE BOLD and the second installment of his crossover with the Ninja Turtles.

There was quite a bit of excitement around MIGHT THOR #705, featuring Jane Foster's inevitable last hurrah. I imagine fans will be pleased to see Dauterman back on art duties to see her off in style.

Elsewhere personal favorite MONSTRESS continues to do well for us, as does Marvel's solo Thanos title and DC stalwarts SUPERMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE filling in the bottom of our top sellers.

DC took 7 of our top ten and Marvel took 3, but Marvel took 9 of our top 20, showing that their readership is gradually returning as they discover that Marvel is producing quality comics again. Damage remained in our top ten for a third issue, but readers are expressing concerns about the departure of the big name art talent that was supposed to be a driving force on the New Age of DC Heroes; some are already asking to drop New Age titles once the founding artists leave the series. Could be a rapid and dramatic fall-off!

Notable sales:

Captain Marvel #17 vf/nm $20 – First appearance/cameo of Kamala Khan. Sold it for a little less than we probably should/could have, but the customer was a regular and very grateful.

Journey into Mystery #83 – Sold this big key at the Oak City ComicCon last Sunday.

X-Men #29 ungraded 9.0 estimate $226 – Not a key book, but the condition was so good that it sold within a day of the time we got it in.
