Boom Studios To Devalue Universal Championship With WWE #1 Retailer Kit
It's bad enough that Finn Balor got himself injured immediately after becoming the first WWE Universal Champion back in August, but WWE's insistence on using hot potato title changes to draw ratings has been taken to a whole new level by a new promotion from BOOM! Studios for their upcoming WWE comic. According to a press release, "qualifying" retailers who participate in the program will receive:
(25) WWE Universal Championship Comic Book polybags, with a custom-printed WWE title to make your copy of WWE #1 or any other comic the champion of your collection!
(25) WWE Universal Championship stickers, commemorating the historic release of WWE #1
(25) BOOM! Studios WWE postcards
WWE #1 Full-Size Promo Posters
(1) WWE #1 Title Variant, one of the most limited variants in BOOM! Studios history
Not only will BOOM! be crowning 25 new Universal Champions per comic book store, but the championship won't even be a belt – it will be a polybag! That's just insulting, even if Barry Windham did have a legendary run with the Death of Superman title in WCW in 1992. About the only thing worse than this we can think of would be putting the title on Roman Reigns (booooooooo)!
The worst part of all of this is that BOOM!'s WWE comics were doing so well even without hot shotting 25 title matches for free in comic book stores, which are basically glorified house shows. WWE Then, Now, Forever just entered its third printing, and WWE recently made the best comic book trailer since the 1980s in support of the book. Instead of all these title changes, WWE should be building to a meaningful match in its $7.99 Wrestlemania special coming next year.
Retailers are told to check Diamond Daily for information on how to qualify, but Bleeding Cool can EXXXCLUSIVELY reveal that retailers will need to defeat The Big Show in a match… and it starts… right now!
