Dave Sim Could Create And Publish James Bond Comics If He Wanted

gun_fuOn January the 1st, the character of James Bond entered public domain in Canada. Which mean, if anyone so wishes, they could create James Bond comic books, legally, ahead of Dynamite's licensed James Bond comic books later this year.

You wouldn't be able to distribute them for sale overseas, to the US or the UK for example, where the character is still in copyright for another twenty years.

That still counts for digital comic books as well. And only covers work based on the Ian Fleming version of James Bond, rather than the film versions. No Sean Connery Bond for you, not even in Canada. And Blofeld may not have a white cat…

So, yes, Dave Sim could if he wanted, publish James Bond comic books. It's just that most of us wouldn't be able to get copies… legally.
