Doomsday Clock Clarifies Just Which State Metropolis Can Be Found In…
Where is Gotham? And where is Metropolis? Described as New York at night and New York by day, respectively, their location has been up in the air. Originally modelled on Toronto, New York City certainly became Metropolis' greatest influence. However, it has been clarified – and contradicted – a few times.
In Superman #2 in 1939, Clark Kent sends a telegram to his editor, addressed to Metropolis, N.Y while in the 1940s Superman cartoons, he actually lives on the island of Manhattan. In Action Comics #143 from 1950, it states that the Statue of Liberty stands in Metropolis Harbor rather than New York Harbor. But The Amazing World Of DC Comics #14 in 1977 , when describing the history of the members of the Justice League stated that Gotham was in New Jersey and that Metropolis was in Delaware.
For that matter, Smallville was in Maryland, Ivy Tow is in Connecticut, Star City is in Massachusetts and Central City is in Ohio.
Later they would even publish a map to underline all this.
Zoom in and yes, Metropolis is in Delaware.
The 1986 revamp of Superman moved Metropolis to Kansas. The 1990 Atlas of the DC Universe role playing game supplement, published by Mayfair Games, stated that Metropolis is back in Delaware. The 1992 Death of Superman storyline depicts Doomsday on a path from Ohio through the state of New York, ending in Metropolis. In 2005, Countdown to Infinite Crisis also places Metropolis in the state of New York. Of course, there have been reboots and rebirths since. But in Doomsday Clock, Lois Lane received a package.
Sorry, wrong package.
That's better. And one that was delivered to a very specific address.
The Daily Planet, 2526 Metropolis, New York 10025. A zip code that in the US, denotes an area of Manhattan, through which Broadway runs… Sorry, Delaware, you lose. Metropolis appears to have eaten New York.
