Dynamite Launches Kickstarter To Republish Marvel's Gargoyles Comics

Dynamite launches Kickstarter to republish Marvel and Slave Labor Graphics' Gargoyles comics with Greg Weisman for 2024.

Article Summary

  • Dynamite Entertainment to republish Marvel's Gargoyles comics via Kickstarter.
  • Greg Weisman supports bringing both Marvel and SLG series back for fans.
  • Collection includes rare comics and volumes missed by fans, now in standard size.
  • Kickstarter offers exclusive hardcovers, prints, and art from notable creators.

Dynamite Entertainment's Nick Barrucci tells us "this is one of the biggest announcements we've ever made. Our relationship with Disney has been incredible, and we continue to work together to create great comics for the fans.  In discussions with Disney, we noticed that there was never a collection of the Marvel material from the first Gargoyles series. And we also noted that the SLG collections were going for a lot of money on eBay and the secondary market, also, the size were smaller on these collections, and we thought that fans would want a more standard-size series of collections to be brought back into print. There was a lot of work to digitize the books, and put them together for fans today."

Dynamite is the third major publisher to publish Gargoyles comic books, following Marvel Comics and Slave Labor Graphics. Barrucci continues; "So we presented a plan to Disney to bring the Marvel issues into collection for the first time, and the SLG collections back in print and in a standard size. We thought to find a wider audience, that Kickstarter was the perfect platform with the number of fans who visit every day. It's great to offer to fans in advance, and then the marketing is out there for any fans who wish to wait and buy from their local retailer. And the best part, Greg Wiseman is fully behind this and excited to see the books back in print.  It's a win/win all around."

Greg Weisman being the creator of the Gargoyles cartoon series, as well as the writer of many of the comic books. And now, for the 30th anniversary of Gargoyles, Dynamite is offering three books collecting all of these previous tales, initially on Kickstarter.

"I'm honestly thrilled that these three volumes will finally give Gargoyles fans easy access to these great stories, including the canon SLG tales!," said Greg Weisman. "I think the Dynamite Kickstarter is a great way for Gargoyles fans to get the word out and to reserve their copies. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I hope our fans don't miss out!"

The first volume is a compilation of the first Gargoyles comic series from 1995. This 11-issue title was originally released by Marvel Comics and is set loosely between the first two seasons of the original TV show. The first issue featured a cover by Joe Madureira, written by Martin Pasko and Mort Todd, with Amanda Conner drawing for the series as well as most of the covers. Artist Grant Miehm also contributed, alongside Alberto Saichann and Jimmy Palmiotti inking. These comics have never before been reprinted in full.

The second and third volumes of the Gargoyles Classic Years, will republish the 2006 to 2009 Gargoyles series launched from SLG Publishing in association with CreatureComics, the first written by Greg Weisman. The main series, often referred to as "Clan Building," was joined by a companion title, Bad Guys. Issues #9-12 of Gargoyles and #5-6 of Bad Guys were never published as planned and were only printed in later paperback collections, which themselves had small print runs at a smaller digest size and sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay and Amazon marketplace.

The three volume set is available in multiple variations, as either hardcover or paperbacks, with deluxe hardcover editions with signed tip-in pages. The most premium option will be the Gargoyles 30th Anniversary Premier Editions limited to just 1,000 copies each. The Kickstarter will also offer lithograph prints of Jae Lee and Amanda Conner's covers for Dynamite's Gargoyles #1 and a deluxe signed and remarqued giclée print of Lee's Gargoyles art. Also facsimile editions of the very first issue with gold or purple foil stamping. Sketch cover options are also available, as well as commissioned original art from Lee. The Kickstarter campaign should be found somewhere around here…
