Tony Lee Talks Ending Battlestar Galactica: Starbuck And An Exclusive Extended Preview Of #4
The Battlestar Galactica: Starbuck series concludes this week with issue #4. Here we have an exclusive extended preview of the issue and a short Q&A about the book between series writer Tony Lee and Robert Place Napton.
Robert Place Napton: Without giving anything away, the character of Athena shines in this issue. I always thought she was a character terribly underserved in the original series — did you enjoy showing a different side to her?
Tony Lee: Absolutely. The problem with seventies and eighties TV was that the girls in it were glorified 'eye candy', never really being allowed to step forward and shine for themselves unless it was some kind of 'all the men are injured and the girls get to play' type episodes. And this really annoyed me as in a military situation, you wouldn't have this. And in a situation where there's a finite amount of humans left, every soldier counts. So to have a chance to really have a female kick-ass character that's already established finally step up to the plate was too good an opportunity to miss.
RPN: The scale and scope of this issue is great — it's a big finish. Did you want to open things up a bit and end on a big note?
TL: Hell yes. What's the point of doing a four part story if you can't do something epic in the fourth issue? I'd much rather have the final act filled with 'oh my god' moments than Starbuck and Apollo discussing lawn tenancy or something. I wanted a real heart in throat moment, we know who lives as they're in the show, but I wanted to throw a certain amount of threat into the issue, to show that at least something could be lost. And that panel with the big screen, and the reaction? I has shivers when I saw it lettered. Original BSG always suffered with budget cuts. Comics give you a far greater scale.
RPN: Starbuck and his relationship with Adama and Apollo again gets some nice moments here. He really is like an adopted son, isn't he?
TL: Oh yes. If you watch Dirk in the show, you can see that he's been allowed to get away with murder. And for a kid who's grown up with no family, someone like Adama entering as a father figure is an obvious attraction. And Apollo and Starbuck gave always been close in the show, it's a natural progression.
RPN: Again, no spoilers, but you tie things up nicely. Is there more to tell along this trajectory or do you feel you've filled in the missing origin of Starbuck in this series?
TL: I left a few open threads just in case, but I think I dovetailed nicely into the original TV series. Sure, I'd love to do more in the original BSG world, but I think I'd like to do something a little more off the wall. I have ideas, we'll see!
