The 1st Marvel Romance Mixes Love & Football, My Romance 1 at Auction

Marvel romance comics feature some amazing covers, but this one at Heritage Auctions asks the important questions.

Marvel romance was one of many ways Marvel made money back in the day, publishing romantic funny books for quite a long time in their history. These books are hilariously out of touch these days, but the covers especially are gold. Issue one of My Romance, published in 1948, featured an anthology of stories, including the four featured on the cover. My favorite? Can football and love mix? Can you imagine? How funny is it that there have been countless stories of this kind over the years, but somehow it still works. Maybe not calling someone a droop, but still. My Romance was Marvel's first romance series, with the title soon changed to My Own Romance. Within two years, the publisher had launched a staggering 31 romance titles, with most of them quickly failing.  But this flagship romance series remained one of the Marvel success stories of the period, lasting 76 issues 1948-1950.  There's a My Romance #1 (Marvel, 1948) Condition: FN- up for auction in the 2023 October 26 – 27 Romance Comics Featuring L. B. Cole Showcase Auction #40224 at Heritage Auctions.

Marvel Romance Books Are Always Worth Grabbing

The eight stories Marvel included in this book are: "Love For A Crooner!", "The Ring!", "Too Young For Romance!", "Ship Ahoy!", "The One Who Waited", "These Are The Tales Of The Witness!", "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World!", and finally, the main event, "Football And Love Don't Mix!". I am sensing a theme from those titles, I wonder what it is?

Kidding aside, these books are some of the most fun to collect as far as golden age books are concerned. Weird to think about a time when these books were dominating the shelf, but they did, and Marvel published a ton of them. I also wish on books like these that the creators were credited more clearly, a mistake that we don't hold these companies more accountable on enough. If you would like to read if love and football do in fact mix, there's a My Romance #1 (Marvel, 1948) Condition: FN- up for auction in the 2023 October 26 – 27 Romance Comics Featuring L. B. Cole Showcase Auction #40224 at Heritage Auctions.
