NYCC '15: Valiant Reveals New Shadowman Design For Operation: Deadside
Just announced at New York Comic-Con, Valiant has revealed the first look at artwork and character designs for Operation: Deadside, beginning in December's Ninjak #10 by Matt Kindt and Doug Braithwaite — the first issue of the four-part "in-series event" that's slated to return Shadowman to the thick of Valiant's publishing line.
Featuring Shadowman going toe-to-toe with Ninjak and Valiant's safety-pinned voodoo priestess, Punk Mambo, in the parallel dimension called Deadside after an MI-6 paranormal research expedition goes awry, Valiant's reps are comparing the storyline tonally to films like James Cameron's Abyss and Aliens. Moreover, they're also touting it as the first step in a longterm plan for the Shadowman character that has been under development for more than a year.
Indeed, Shadowman's new look – as designed by artist Clayton Henry – does seem to bear out a new direction for the character… One that will likely flesh the back story of just what has happened to the long-suffering hero since he became trapped in the Deadside dimension last year at the conclusion of Peter Milligan and Valentine de Landro's Shadowman: End Times series.
Whether the new costume will stick once Operation: Deadside wraps in early 2016 remains to be seen. In the meantime, Valiant has also debuted the first pages from Ninjak #10 by artist Doug Braithwaite – another preeminent member of Valiant's stable of exclusive artists that now also includes David Lafuente of the upcoming A&A series, also announced at New York Comic Con…
Operation: Deadside will begin in December's Ninjak #10 and feature glow-in-the-dark shelf covers from Braitwhaite, Tom Muller and Trevor Hairsine.
