So this week, we have a smattering of Marvel mutantity. The Resurrection Of Magneto #1, X-Force #48, X-Men Unlimited #123, but also a little Immortal Thor #6 and Defenders Beyond #5 from a bit ago. Very, very occasionally, I wonder if the X-Men comic books are using Bleeding Cool for their research. Such as in today's X-Force #48 rundown of the crimes of Hank McCoy, The Beast.
I mean, we have definitely done that list. Though we'd also throw in the bit about breaking the timeline with the Original X-Men as well.
Al Ewing has no need, of course, he is a walking Enclycopaedia that he writes notes in and fills it with ribbons. Because today's Resurrection Of Magneto #1, a very diferent Blue Marvel to Hank McCoy tries to get the bigger picture, with both Orchis and the Dominion, alongside Taiia of Taa, the home planet of Galactus, a couple of iterations ago. And who last appeared in Defenders Beyond #5, being given prophesy of what is to come. Something vast coming for reality. A crown above al things…
And Loki dropping the line about the Fifth Business.
Could what is coming be the Dominion? Or a Dominion?
One of the Sinisters, possibly the original Nathaniel Essex, who at some point gains the immense intelligence and density neede to collapse a black hole on himself but remaining sentient, in alliance with others, and creating for all time, past present and future, a local god?
Let's back up a minute. X-Men Infinity Unlimited #123 keeps it more local gathering the troops. As everyone is preparing for what is to come in the Fall Of X with Orchis…
Storm continues to sure up alliances and allegiances ahead of the war on Earth from Arakko – something a Dominion may potentially take a side in. But Storm is also trying to get a big gun back onto their side.
X-Force #48 sees Sage plan to dealm with an existing gun in play, by fighting fire with fire. And bringing back a different Beast, using the old memory files from his "stars and garters" phase in the Avengers, something we thought might be happening previously, albeit for different reasons.
And we get a return to the supernatural mutant plane created by Wanda Maximoff, to collate and restore dead mutant sould, sometimes beyond even where Krakoan resurrection technology could reach. And that still, potentially might have Magneto there.
While this version of the Beast is playing catch up as much as possible, over his own resurection and the implications of this.
So as Storm visits the very nature of reality, with Death, Infinity Stores, Living Triunals and more taking their place in Eternity…
…one might long for the relatively easy resurrection that the mutants previously enjoyed.
With Tarn The Uncaring of Arakko taking control of the mutant afterlife, after being murdered by Magneto, as might befit an Omega Level mutant and sorcerer.
But he is not the be all and end al, and Storm has so many realities to fight through, and dreams of Magneto to interpret. Fibe helmeyts, the fifth business, five members of the original X-Men led by Professor X, five members of the original Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants including Magneto.
But it seems that the souls of Magneto, and all the other mutants that were in the Waiting Place, have now passed on. So we are not looking at a mass Krakoan resurection after the Fall Of X… unless of course there are other gods at play.
A Dominion was definied in House Of X as ten or more Titan-level intelligences that had become dense enough to form a singularity.
Might five also do, or will that always be a Stronghold?
But they have more ro share, and reference Defenders Beyond #5. As Al Ewing brings together a variety of strands with the Beyonder…
… or indeed the Beyonders… Celestial Survivors, the Omega Council and Ivory Kings.
Whilke the Dominion throws in the Fifth Business and enemy of Eternity, Enigma, into the process. Al Ewing bringing it all together, which also makes me think about today's Immortal Thor #6 with Enchantress and thre remains of Dagger, minotaur CEO of Roxxon, the new owners of Marvel.
And how something similar played out in Defenders Beyond.
Because this is how Defenders Beyond portaryed that reality.
And just what the Beyonder thought of it all. While all this cosmic shenanigans are playhing out, with Magneto being resurrected and Storm opening up new realities to explore… things fall between teh cracks…
The Externals are back as well! A group of immortal mutants, a number of whom were killed by Apocalypse, using the bones of their bodies to built an External Gate which opened to Otherworld and from there to Arakko, which would lead to the terraforming of Mars and the eventual death of Magneto. So just as we have the return of Shatterstar, we also have the return of Gideon, both created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza for New Mutants, there's a lot of closure around this week…
