Original Artwork by Mike McMahon From Very First Published Judge Dredd 2000AD Story Goes On the Block

John Bamber writes to tell Bleeding Cool that he is selling the original artwork to the first published Judge Dredd comic book story from 2000AD #2 in 1977. Created by Pat Mills, John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, the first story was written by Peter Harris and drawn by Mick McMahon. And its those five pages that have just been listed by Heritage Auctions. This is a real piece of history – original artwork for the first published appearance of such an iconic character are rather rare. Heritage Auction describes it as "easily the most important piece of UK comic book art we have ever offered". Here's their full listing.

Mike McMahon 2000 AD #2 Judge Dredd First Appearance Complete 5-Page Story Original Art (IPC, 1977). This is easily the most important piece of UK comic book art we have ever offered. He is the Law. And this is his first comic book story appearance! It was indeed a "New Thrill" from the fledgling 2000 AD, as they introduced the toughest Lawman in Mega City One… Judge Dredd! The Judges were empowered to be Judge, Jury, and Executioner if need be, and rode the streets of the City on huge Lawbringer motorcycles, armed with their Lawgiver pistols. This one story set all of that up. It would eventually inspire two movies, 1995's Judge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone, and 2012's Dredd starring Karl Urban.

The Dredd figure inset image on Page 1 is a stat paste-up of an image by Carlos Ezquerra used in a promotional advertisement weeks in advance. The rest of the page were created in ink and Zipatone on Bristol board with an image area of 13.5" x 17.25". All text is paste-up. Page 1 has a slit just below where the missing paste-up log would be, and a rip in each side margin. Page 1 is in Good condition, the others are in Very Good condition.
