Bill Willingham's Obsidian Controversy Kicks Off

Bill Willingham's Obsidian Controversy Kicks OffHow could you do it Bill?

When you took over the JSA books, there were fears from a number of people over how you would handle the character Obsidian, one of the DC Universe's few male gay superheroes, given a few comments you'd make in the past.

And you made him an egg.

Anyway he's back now and last issue had a conversation that made his sexuality as concrete as it comes.

And took the piss out of online commentary and expectations in the process. See right.

A little clumsy, a little too yuk-yuk, possibly.

But that's not what we're talking about.

No, we're talking about Alan Scott's father to son chat with Obsidian later in the comic.

In which Scott talks about how his family have always been Mets supporters.

Except here's the thing. Scott's a superhero from the nineteen forties, a World War II veteran. He and the rest of the JSA were pushed into limbo by Hitler's energy waves until they re-emerged in the nineties. Which probably counts as a few years ago in current DC continuity.

Well, the Mets only came into existence in 1962. The Scott household couldn't have grown up supporting the Mets. Theyh just weren't there then. And the JSA is permanently tied into World War II timelines. While Williams has shown his acceptance of pre-existing gay superhero characters… he's failed at combining comic character continuity and baseball lore.

As a result all right thinking comic book fans must shun his work in its entirety. Shun it I say! Shun it!

UPDATE: Oh it gets worse. As one reader writes to say that it's odd that Obsidian is a Twins fan, "given that he grew up in Milwaukee, home of the Brewers."

Maybe we need a Baseball In Comics panel at San Diego.
