Did DC Comics Just Kill Off a Major Batman Villain? [Red Hood and the Outlaws #24 Spoilers]
Today's Red Hood and the Outlaws #24 promised something: outlaws that kill.
But did they deliver? With Jason Todd, Red Hood going toe to toe with a certain Oswald Cobbleppot, The Penguin. And doing the big mask-off move…
No mind tricks here, we get origin, we get reveal, we get no going back… and a Jason Todd willing to do what Batman never would.
At that distance it would be difficult to miss. But just to be sure…
Right in the eye socket? Is that a confirmed kill of one of Batman's oldest foes, by a Robin-turned-to-the-dark side?
The Penguin first appeared in Detective Comics #58 in 1941 and was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. A Gotham City mobster who fancies himself a "gentleman of crime", often wearing a monocle, top hat, and tuxedo, and he uses high-tech umbrellas as weapons — though as The Joker pointed out in Batman #49, he has no idea why he uses the umbrella motif.
According to Bill Kane, the character was inspired from the advertising mascot of Kool cigarettes, a penguin with a top hat and cane — and that cane became an umbrella somehow. While Finger thought the image of high-society gentlemen in tuxedos was reminiscent of emperor penguins. Still, the umbrella remains a mystery. And now we'll never be able to ask…
Well… Batman takes a look at the footage. As do we. Get to hear a few things too…
We circled that bit. Point blank it may be but somehow the Penguin is still… flapping. For now.
