Diamond Causes Confusion With 2010 Gem Awards

Diamond Causes Confusion With 2010 Gem AwardsWhat is a licensed book? And what is a reprint/collection?

That's the question that has been expertly evaded as in their end-of-year awards for the best selling titles and publishers of 2011, Diamond have given a Gem award to the Kick-Ass Premiere hardcover as the Best Licensed TP/HC of the year, while giving Best Reprint TP/HC of the Year to The Walking Dead Volume 13: Too Far Gone.

Both were comics that spun off multi-media properties, Kick-Ass resulting in a movie, Walking Dead in a TV series. But why the different categories. When asked, Diamond told Bleeding Cool;

The licensed comic and trade paperback categories are specifically designed to honor outstanding work on a licensed property (something coming from television, movies, or other existing property) that has been translated into the comics medium. The Reprint TP category is honoring any collection that re-prints a serialized comic series into a trade collection.

Well Kick Ass didn't come from TV, movies or another existing property. And the collection was published just in time for the movie to come out. And if it counts as a licensed property – then doesn't Walking Dead count as one too?

Slightly odd… but then so is the realisation that Marvel only picked up awards for Kick Ass. The Gem Awards, more than any, reward "sales achievement", nothing else. And Marvel dominated sales, yet DC win Publisher Of The Year for a second year in a row…

I'm sure thee's a complicated algorithm at the heart of it. Here are those Gem Awards in full.
