Let's See What Sticks – On Rewards And Kickstarters From Noir City

By Cody Walker

If my kickstarter Noir City makes it, I will have to do video eulogy for my sister. Let me step back for a moment.

I knew my second Kickstarter was going to be difficult. Traditionally, Kickstarters for issue 2 of a series don't do as well as the first. I thought adding a reward where backers could get issue 1 AND 2 would fix this, but that hasn't been the case. And I get it. Jumping onto an issue 2 of a comic that actually comes out to stores is hard enough much less a Kickstarter for a second issue of a comic from people you've never heard of.

Right now, our Kickstarter is struggling. Our goal is $4500 and we haven't made half that yet. The issue is finished and ready to go which I thought would be the biggest point to bringing people in, but we haven't nearly had the success that I thought we would. There are a number of reasons beyond the second issue thing, but I'm not here to dwell upon them. Rather, I'd like to focus on something more fun: finding new rewards.

For April Fool's Day, I decided to come up with a number of fun rewards for backers. They may seem ridiculous, but I WANT to do them precisely because they are.

The first thing I thought of was a video eulogy for $40 (along with print and digital copies of the comic). When I conceived of this, I thought of someone I didn't know donating money for me (a random stranger) performing a eulogy for them. I found the idea hilarious and never once considered it to be morbid because it would be this faceless person I've never met.

Then, my best friend Jessica (the closest thing to a sister I have in this world, the girl who nearly killed me when I was an infant by feeding me raisins, the girl I lived with in college) donated to the Kickstarter and requested the video eulogy reward. Suddenly, it became very real for me. It became a little too real. And morbid. And sad.

I have no idea what I'm going to say. Whether it should be absurd or heartfelt. It will probably be both.

But we have some other great rewards as well including:

$25 – A special artwork commission from Duncan (age: 16 months old). In addition, you get a print edition of Noir City #2. Digital copy of the comic and a thanks on the website and in the issue. Free shipping in the U.S. and plus $10 for international shipping. This one is a steal of a deal considering the artwork is PRICELESS!

$30 – One comic book from Cody's personal collection along with a brief essay detailing why it is a personal favorite of his. In addition, you get a print edition of Noir City #2. Digital copy of the comic and a thanks on the website and in the issue. Free shipping in the U.S. and plus $10 for international shipping.

$35 – An audio drama recording of issues 1 and 2 performed by Cody Walker! In addition, you get a print edition of Noir City #2. Digital copy of the comic and a thanks on the website and in the issue. Free shipping in the U.S. and plus $10 for international shipping.

$40 – The fanfiction of your choice will be performed by Cody Walker! In addition, you get a print edition of Noir City #2. Digital copy of the comic and a thanks on the website and in the issue. Free shipping in the U.S. and plus $10 for international shipping.

$80 – You get it all!

When I told my wife that I wanted to do an audio drama version of our comics, she requested to play all the girl parts. And if for nothing else, I hope this Kickstarter makes so my wife and I can perform the comic scripts with as many cheap sound effects as we can make.

But only you can make that happen. So please help us out if for no other reason than making me have to become very emotional about the pretended death of my surrogate sister.

Here's the trailer for Noir City:
