Nine years since I had to walk to work because, for some reason, they'd closed the tube stations and the bus I was on, crossing Waterloo bridge suddenly stopped and all the passengers were told to get off. Walking into London's West End, you started you hear rumours. By the time I got to the office, it was clear what had happened. So we all left our desks in went down the pub – and the callous jokes had already started. And were funny. It felt a very British way of dealing with things.
