Marvel Comics to Publish The Death of Squirrel Girl

Created by Will Murray and Steve Ditko and based on comic store employee Doreen Greeley, Squirrel Girl had been treated as a bit of a joke at Marvel Comics. But in recent years, it became a joke that everyone got.

The character was revived and popularised by Dan Slott in one direction and by Brian Michael Bendis in another, before getting her own Eisner Award-winning title by Ryan North and Erica Henderson and finding a brand-new fanbase and audience for Marvel Comics. Squirrel Girl is also set for a live-action version with the TV series-in-want-of-a-home, New Warriors.

But is all that about to end? The solicitation for The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #36 starts a new storyline, The Death of Squirrel Girl. And when Marvel uses that title format — The Death of Gwen Stacy, The Death of Jean Grey, The Death of Ultimate Spider-Man, The Death of Wolverine — they tend to mean it. At least for a bit.

A little unfortunate that this comes out a week or so after the death of her co-creator, but this would have been planned long in advance.

Here's the second issue solicited for October…

Marvel Comics to Publish The Death of Squirrel Girl

THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #37
RYAN NORTH (W)
DEREK CHARM (A)
Cover by ERICA HENDERSON
• It's the latest issue of the all-ages smash hit, THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL! She's defeated Galactus! She's defeated Doctor Doom! Who KNOWS what fun adventures she'll get up to THIS month!
• Well, we do. And you may want to brace yourselves for this, because this issue begins an all-new story arc called…"THE DEATH OF SQUIRREL GIRL"!
• Has the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl been BEATEN? Is this TRULY the end of Doreen Green? We haven't canceled the comic so it doesn't seem likely, but can you REALLY be sure? What if this issue installment actually IS the one Squirrel Girl dies in and you miss out because you didn't buy it?
• So I guess what we're saying here is everyone should definitely buy this comic.
• PLUS: This issue also has Wolverine in it for LITERALLY several pages!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Talking of deaths, we note that Wolverine is back, and so are his guest appearances.
