Sammie Reads – UFOlogy Deserves Five Stars

By Sammie Rice

UFOlogy is one of those books that you immediately know is going to be something special. Much like closing the last page of Saga or picking up the first issue of Descender, you know that what you just read is going to stay with you for a very long time.

image1The story is by James Tynion IV and Noah J. Yuenkel with art by Matthew Fox and colors by Adam Metcalfe. Sometimes you get a group of creative people together and each of their talents blend together flawlessly; this is definitely one of these times!

image4UFOlogy starts out much like an episode from the podcast "Welcome to Nightvale" with an unidentified speaker firmly believing in the unknown living beyond the stars. We are quickly introduced to Becky Finch, a teenage girl who is incredibly smart but is reluctant to apply to any major universities. Then there is Malcolm, a charmingly weird boy with a puzzling past relating to his father and the sky.

What do these two kids have in common besides attending the same high school? Absolutely nothing until a peculiar green streak lights up the night sky and lands in an abandoned mansion. The only thing to do is explore it, of course!

image3You know how when you are at the top of the roller coaster and right before it plummets into the most upside-down and swirly thrill of your life, the world beneath your feet disappears for a minute? Reaching this point in the comic is exactly like that. There is uncertainty about what's coming next. You are frightened for the characters but you are also confident that any perils or hazards that are ahead of you in this adventure is something you wouldn't miss for the world.

A 5 out of 5 star rating doesn't feel like I am giving this book its justice. Seriously, I cannot recommend this comic book enough! If you love the mystery of aliens in space intertwined with working through the awkwardness of growing up you will fall head over heals for UFOlogy #1.

This is also one of those comics that I wish I could get every single week. How am I supposed to wait a whole month until the next issue? Oh well, maybe I can just reread The Woods to hold me over until I can get my nerdy hands all over the next issue!
