Steven Spielberg Wants To Remake West Side Story
… and Fox wants to let him, because how do you say no to Steven Spielberg? Deadline reports that after dropping Robopocalypse and American Sniper and maybe Montezuma, Spielberg has his eyes on a new version of the classic Leonard Bernstein musical instead.
Well, maybe. It seems like this one has only gotten as far as he's interested and the studio is on board if he wants to do it, but judging by how many unmade films he's left in his wake, who knows if West Side Story has any real shot at becoming a reality where those did not?
I wouldn't be opposed to it though. It's classic enough that it can stand reinventions, and musicals are remade all the time (Best Revival is even a legit category at the Tonys, after all). I'm not sure if I would have gone straight to Spielberg as the ideal director, but he's just about the only guy with the clout to even make this a possibility, so why not?
