Tom Hanks To Play True Life Hero, Captain Richard Phillips
Josh Hylton writes for Bleeding Cool:
At some point in some people's lives, they transform from being a normal human being to a hero. These are times when somebody puts their life on line to save others. Sometimes it ends in tragedy and the hero dies and sometimes it ends with a blessing and that person can live to tell the tale. However, how the tale afterwards sometimes irks me. Rather than become an example of the human spirit, some people make millions off of trading on their tale. While I certainly do not want to take away any due credit for their actions, I can't help but shake my head in disgust at the shameless marketing of a heroic story.
Case in point: it seems to be happening again. The story of Captain Richard Phillips, who volunteered to be a Somali pirate hostage in exchange for the safety of his crew, which was first turned into a book called A Captain's Dangerous Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, is heading to the big screen. The news comes from Deadline, who says that Tom Hanks is attached to play the Captain.
Call me cold hearted if you will, but I can't say I'm too excited for what will surely be an overdramatized, manipulative tearjerker. Nevertheless, I tip my hat to Phillips for what he did and give him all the respect in the world.
