Same-Day Sellouts for Abbot #1 and Gears of War: Rise of RAAM #1 – But What About the Second Printings?
Abbott #1, the first original comics series from Hugo Award-nominated writer Saladin Ahmed (Marvel's Black Bolt, the Crescent Moon Kingdoms novels) and artist Sami Kivelä (Black Mask's Beautiful Canvas), sold out at Diamond before most comic shops opened today in the US. But then, it did have some good press…
It's unknown if Boom! Studios will go back to press on Abbott #1, as they've been more about delivering collections sooner to the Direct Market (as we've seen with their Mech Cadet Yu and Fence Discover Now editions), but this series continues a trend of immediate sell outs-for their original series — from Grass Kings (by Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins), Mech Cadet Yu (Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa), Heavy Vinyl (Carly Usdin and artist Nina Vakueva) to the recent Judas (Jeff Loveness and Jakub Rebelka).
While Image Comics has been the publisher where fans have gone to find those hot new #1s, given the success of Saga or The Walking Dead, it seems like Boom! Studios may be the publisher to watch for hot new series given the quick sell-outs and their first look deal with Fox, which is bringing series like Lumberjanes and Goldie Vance to the big screen, which will only drive demand for those debut issues…
One that is going to second print is Gears of War: The Rise of RAAM #1 from IDW, again, before many American comic stores are even open.
The second printing of the debut issue is scheduled for release on 2/21 to be made available concurrently with the same on-sale date of issue #2.
Scripted by Kurtis Wiebe (Rat Queens) with art by Max Dunbar (First Strike), colors by Jose Luis Rio, and letters by Gilberto Lazcano, this essential story in the ongoing saga explores the most iconic villain in the Gears of War universe, General RAAM! Years before he became the bane of humanity on Emergence Day, RAAM rose through the ranks to take leadership of the Locust Horde armies thanks to his intelligence, strength, and ruthlessness, and now fans can witness the untold tale of his vicious ascent.
