"Setting It On Mars Was The Way To Go" – Corinna Bechko Talks Getting Aliens / Vampirella

Mark Waid, writer of Justice Inc.: The Avenger #5, talks with writer Corinna Bechko about Aliens/Vampirella #2, both on sale now. Cover by Gabriel Hardman.

AliensVampi02CovAHardmanMARK WAID: Sweet assignment.  How did you land it?

CORINNA BECHKO: When my editor Joseph Rybandt told me about the crossover, I loved the concept. I sent in three different ideas of how the scenario could play out but everyone agreed that setting it on Mars was the way to go. The big news coming out of the Red Planet lately has made me happy I'm getting to spend extra mental  time there in the company of Vampi and the Xenomorphs.

MW: How much mental ju-jitsu did you have to do to figure out the best way to combine these franchises?

CB: It really wasn't that hard once the core idea settled into a workable storyline. Vampi has some extra-planetary history and Nancy Collins' recent Vampirella run served as a point of inspiration for some of the other characters. I am also a huge fan of the original two Alien films, so all in all this miniseries has been a very natural fit for me.

MW: Happy with the art and the way the artist is executing the story?

CB: Absolutely! Javier is doing an amazing job. His Xenomorphs have a real dynamism to them, and I love the way he handles Vampirella. There's a lot of action in this story (and a lot of blood) so it could have been a disaster if the artist wasn't on board with those elements.

MW: What's been the most surprising thing you've found while writing this?

CB: How hard it would actually be to start a colony on Mars. I've done a lot of reading about the problems Martian pioneers would face, and they are not all as easily solvable as most people think. That's kind of obvious, but when you actually start to look at the minutia of what would kill you there, and what it would take to keep you alive, it becomes daunting. I still think we will achieve it some day, but I didn't expect to become so invested in the idea of seeing it as a reality within my lifetime.
