Shannon Maer's Siren's Gate #1 Jumps To 40 Pages Long For FOC

Ahead of Monday's FOC, Shannon Maer's Siren's Gate #1 has jumped from being a 32 page comic book to being a 40 page comic at no extra cost – just a bigger comic book story to tell. Nick Barrucci of Dynamite Entertainment states that "there are so many massively talented creators in comics today, and many doing stunning covers that fans love to collect on top of the great stories within. Many of them rarely, if ever, get around to drawing stories even as shorts, let alone full series. That's exactly what readers will be getting with Shannon Maer's new creator-owned series SIRENS GATE! This returnable October title will blow fans away with stunning artwork and story, and join the ranks of other legends like Alex Ross, Joe Jusko, Bill Sienkiewicz, Joseph Michael Linsner, and others".

So, no pressure. The first issue, is returnable to those stores who order 15 copies or more. Shannon states "The idea for this story actually dates back many years. During one of my inspired moments, I sat down and began to write a novel. I don't usually start with the question, can I do this—but rather, let's just find out. Surprisingly I did get rather far along in the book, but perhaps I had the recurring notion that this story might flow better from me in the form of a graphic novel. When I sat down to work on this, it was very important that the work flowed naturally from me. I didn't want to place any restrictions on myself, or have any preconceived ideas of how the interiors were supposed to look. This notion became very clear to me when I realized that without thought—I had incorporated the word balloons as a dimensional element within the scene. I believe I had completed the page before realizing that this probably wasn't a usual way to approach them. It just felt very natural to me."

"As for the art style, I believe the interiors are a good representation of maintaining the same look as the covers that people have become accustomed to seeing from me. During the earlier stages of my artistic development, it was unquestioningly the great fantasy illustrators that held the most influence on me. I revelled in the freedom of colour, as well as the dramatic uses of light and shadow. I imagine this aspect still remains prevalent in my comics work today. It's also important to me that the feel of the story flows naturally. I didn't want to become restricted by any assumptions about a particular genre, which is why I had a bit of difficulty ultimately classifying it. I am very much looking forward to the path that these characters will embark upon—and I am optimistic that the reader will enjoy quite a few surprises along the way."
