Everyone Thinks The Grey Hulk Is In Avengers: Age Of Ultron
So we posted the Funko ad that appeared in the Hot Topic exclusive version of Marvel's Star Wars #1. The one that prompted head office to withdraw it from sales with store managers then told to destroy copies. And the news that a second version was being made and distributed to stores without the offending ad – that might have spoiled Avengers: Age Of Ultron.
The conclusion was, that rather than the grey Hulk being an exclusive variant of the Hulk character, as often happens, with no reflection on continuity, his withdrawal, meant that the grey Hulk would be appearing in the movie as "Savage Hulk". A classic case of Streisanding the issue. Not even Bleeding Cool would have considered the ad indicated a spoiler… until it was withdrawn.
Well, it appears, thanks to Bleeding Cool, calmer heads have concluded that the damage is done and store owners have been told that if they haven't destroyed the comics then they can start selling them again.
Which has led to a rollercoaster on the speculator market. At one point we saw sales top $225 for a comic that would have been bought days previously for $3.99. But as of yesterday, $55 is the most anyone will pay…
However there are other comic being affected. Because, now the consensus is that the grey Hulk will appear in the movie…
When first appearing, the Hulk was grey. But problems with printing that colour, saw the character turn green. After the comic was initially cancelled after its sixth issue, the character of the Hulk changed closer to the one we are more familiar today. Creator John Byrne had plans to reuse some of the grey Hulk's more intelligent characteristics and look, and when he left the book, writer Al Milgrom went hell for leather and had Bruce Banner turning into the earlier version of the character. Peter David took over the book and saw the grey Hulk as a mob enforcer in Las Vegas with plans to expand his power base, before eventually reintegrating aspects of the Hulk's various personalities into a new version.
So as a result of all this fuss, a number of comics that were previously selling for cents have moved up the ranking. with Incredible Hulk #324, the first appearance of Al Milgrom's grey Hulk selling for $50 whereas Hulk #323 in similar condition sells for $3.
There have also been hurried sales with people buying up comics such as Amazing Spider-Man #328…
Incredible Hulk #345
Incredible Hulk #344
And Wolverine #8…
So… do you have any grey Hulk comics in your closet that you are prepared to flip?
