The State Of The Modern Aquamarriage Today
When Aquaman rebooted back in 2011 as part of the New 52, Aquaman and Mera were no longer married. All of the Justice Leaguers aside from Animal Man found their marriages has been summarily dissolved. All part of an attempt to keep lead characters single, open to younger storylines, and romantic possibilities – such as Superman and Wonder Woman hooking up, or Lois Lane and the now-long forgotten Jonathan Carroll.
But Geoff Johns, writer of Aquaman, was determined to have his cake and eat it, He kept Aquaman and Mera as a couple, as a King and Queen even, just never mentioned they were married. Never had them use the word husband or wife. Consort was as close as it got.
He obeyed the letter of the dictate while ignoring utterly the spirit of it.
Though some, later, writers forgot.
So when, in the DC Rebirth Special, we got this scene, we knew that it meant a sea change. As it were. But a few short months later?
According to today's Aquaman #16 by Dan Abnett, Brad Walker and Andrew Hennessy… it may not happen at all.
Though I have to say I am getting pretty fed up people being forced to act upon prophecies into the near future in comic books right now. Seriously.
Are we back to Aquaman and Mera living in sea sin?
Aquaman #16 is published by DC Comics today.
