Terrific Production LLC Cancels Contest That Could Have Made You the Next Rob Liefeld (By Owning Your Characters)

Terrific Production LLC has long been claiming that they can make comic book artists famous. But the publisher owned by Andrew Rev took things to another level Wednesday, reaching out to anyone on the internet with an offer to design a character to fight Youngblood. The only catch: they would own the rights to the character as soon as you tweet it at them.

Shockingly, this idea did not resonate well with the comics community, prompting Terrific to point out that Erik Larsen once ran a similar contest.

This is how people who are not followers come to this site and try to create a narrative that we are interested to get free ideas. We are happy to pay for ideas of new characters if that is what someone wishes to do. This Art Contest is to see your character in the comics.

But an hour after launching the contest, Terrific decided to cancel it.

Claiming that the contest was intended only to own the intellectual property rights of fans, not artists.

And now, thanks to the vocal minority, no fan characters will be allowed to appear in Terrific Production comics in the future. Bummer!

As far as when those comics might come out, Terrific Production LLC still hasn't announced a creative team or release date for Youngblood Unchained #1 yet, but judging by tweets from the weekend, they may be moving forward with some kind of reprints. Terrific announced that they have successfully managed to retouch the covers to Youngblood to remove the Image Comics "i" logo.

We have successfully been able to photo retouch the covers of Youngblood without the "I" on the left. The incredible work has the background behind the "I" look the same.
When we covers we will pay royalty payments to artists.

A marvel of modern technology, for certain.

Bleeding Cool has been dutifully following and reporting on the ongoing Twitter exploits of Terrific Production LLC, which recently acquired the rights to Youngblood against the wishes of creator Rob Liefeld. Terrific has been looking to recruit comic book creators on Twitter, even offering to take young up-and-comers like Ryan Stegman and turn them into stars. Terrific has even made overtures toward Alan Moore, as well as David Lapham, James Tynion IV, and Evan Dorkin, amongst others. Terrific's most recent attempt to recruit creators online targeted Brian Wood for a series of Youngblood prose novels.

Last week, Terrific announced a new Youngblood series in Youngblood Unchained #1, and fans helped decide who should write it: legendary X-Men scribe Chris Claremont. Unfortunately, Claremont is currently a Marvel exclusive writer, which could put a damper on those plans. The publisher has, however, reached out on Twitter to DC Comics to invite Jim Lee and Dan Didio to write a Wildstorm crossover with Youngblood. Will they accept?
