Thanos #17 Review: A Legendary Battle Between Gods

This is the final battle between King Thanos and the Fallen One, the Silver Surfer now wielding the mighty Mjolnir. At his side, King Thanos has his younger self and the Cosmic Rider. This battle will shake the heavens and decide the final living sentient creature in all the universe.

And an epic battle it is, as Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw show their understanding of what makes a great Thanos story. It delivers an epic battle between gods and immortals. Silver Surfer throws his full power at the Mad Titans, and he awakens the beast toiling beneath Thanos' citadel.

You even think for a second that the Surfer can win, but this isn't one of those stories. When the tide of battle changes, you realize that it couldn't have ended any other way. After all, it's the name of the story: "Thanos Wins."

I know that I'm fawning over this story more strongly than I probably should, but this is a truly magnificent battle comic. The plot has been set up. We know the stakes. We know the participants. There is only the showdown, and this book delivers on that promise in spades.

Geoff Shaw once again shows impressive talent in depicting massive powers like these clashing. Each blow seems like it is shaking the universe. Each cosmic blast is glorious and massive. There are understated moments too that emphasize the tragedy and beauty in the story. Antonio Fabla's color work is similarly inspired, using a cosmic palette of blues, purples, and blacks at times offset by gold, silver, or deep red. In addition to being a cathartic and explosive comic, it's visually beautiful too.

Thanos #17 brings one of the most impressive fights mainstream comics have seen in quite some time. The two Thanos' throwing down with the Silver Surfer wielding Thor's hammer is one fundamentally awesome ideas for a fight in the Marvel universe, and Cates, Shaw, and Fabela deliver on the potential of the idea. This one comes highly recommended. Give it a read,
