"The Comics Industry Is A Class Action Lawsuit Waiting To Happen" – Mockingbird's Chelsea Cain
Yesterday, Chelsea Cain talked about getting nominated for an Eisner Award (two) but not knowing what happened next. Because Marvel hadn't told her. Ending with this tweet.
Marvel is terrific. It's truly made up of amazing individuals. But Marvel-the-corp? Yeah. They suck.

Immortalised in T-shirt form.
She got a phonecall from Marvel. Then continued the discussion.
Just got off the phone w/ @Marvel. Now I feel bad for venting. They are just people, you guys. With arms and noses and everything…
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
We talked about ways that the system can work a little better for everyone in the future. And I drank two cups of coffee. @Marvel
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
I think @Marvel is my boyfriend. He ignores me. I act out. He calls. I realize that he is the best boyfriend ever… I dye my hair pink.

For clarity: the Eisner ppl depend on the publishers to relay info to nominees bc it's the pubs who submit the books…
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
…The Eisner folks don't have nominee contact info. & I had no contact info for Eisner ppl.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
The pubs "have nothing to do with the Eisners" so there's no follow-up. It's a weird system.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
…No one had asked if I was going. Much less told me how to get a badge & apply for a hotel room & a bunch of other stuff…
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
…Not criticizing my boyfriend. Isn't he cute, you guys? Just saying the system needs retooling. You know me! I like to help.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
…No ill will from anyone. I think everyone in this industry assumes everyone else knows how to do this…
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
…My boyfriend is working on a FAQ sheet for future nominees. See how sharing your emotions can make change in the world? #Hug
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 6, 2017
I've literally never been to a Con professionally. Been lots as a fan…but I have no idea how to go as a writer.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
weirdly I've been invited to a con in Spain-international travel paid-yet not to a single con in the US. Perhaps symptomatic?
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I finally got the FAQ sheet. So applying for hotel room and badge. Fingers crossed!
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I can sleep on your floor, right? If it comes to that?
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I have no idea how to do this. So it's news to me. Seems way better to go as a civilian.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
so how do cons work? Pros apply? & if accepted they get to be in panels? If they show up?
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
do some people get "invited" to be on panels other people pay to be there on panels? Huh…That's …weird.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
you should revolt against that.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
but still. You do shows you're not invited to? So you apply to go to shows? I honestly don't understand.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I've really only written the one thing – Mockingbird. Which I don't get paid for, beyond the page rate…
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
so why apply to cons & pay my way & work to promote a cancelled book I don't get paid for?
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
so why apply to cons & pay my way & work to promote a cancelled book I don't get paid for?
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
this is important. Because, frankly, I think you guys are really getting taken advantage of.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I can say this from a place of privilege. The comics industry is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I know. It seems like the industry has trained people to think it's okay. It's not.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I feel itchy about that. & I think you should too.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
they've sold you on that idea. Like a hypnotist with a watch.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
it breaks my heart that any pub would make the creator of a licensed book pay for promo.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
That is – pardon the expression- utterly fucked up.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I guess I can't relate since I've never been invited to a US show. Still. I think you guys get treated poorly.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
Ha! I've flirted w/ DC. But he always leaves me waiting at the alter.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
I wonder though if that's a story they trick you into embracing.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
Okay, my loves. I'm going to bed. Here's this: what they tell you is bullshit. You are smart & talented & amazing. Be something.
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
well, then, that's very confusing, isn't it?
— Chelsea Cain (@ChelseaCain) June 7, 2017
Seriously. I'm going to bed.
