The Iron Man That Dared Not Speak Its Name At Disney's Avengers Half Marathon (UPDATE)
Regular readers of Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick's newsletter know that today Fraction was running, and DeConnick was walking, an Avengers half marathon at Disneyland. But someone was missing..
My wife and I are at Disneyland this weekend as she is running in the Disney Avengers Superhero Half Marathon on Sunday (dressing as the Wasp). One thing I noticed is that Iron Man is conspicuously absent from all the race promos and materials. You can take your picture with posters of Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk and Falcon, but no Iron Man. The race medal has the Avengers "A" on one side and Cap's shield, Mjolnir and Hulk's fist on the other side, but again, no Iron Man.
Everyone I have asked doesn't know anything about it, but it seems like a glaring and intentional omission.
Indeed it does. During the race, the announcer asked if there was anyone representing Stark Industries, someone with a name of metal, whose name she isn't allowed to say on the microphone. They did not refer to any of the runners dressed as Iron Man as "Iron Man." They are either "Tony Stark" or, bizarrely, "Iron Dude."
What's up? Another one of those bizarre issues that have seen Fantastic Four and X-Men removed from license opportunities? A separate license deal at Disney for Spider-Man regarding theme parks?
It does look a bit odd… Iron Dude…
UPDATE: Tim Finn and Tom Huxley get in touch to mention that this may have something to do with the Ironman Triathlon, trademarked before Marvel got it act together…
