The Most Well Timed For Valentine's Day Comic Ever
When I was a child, our family played a Victorian card game called Winkle's Wedding. It featured a small booklet telling the story of Winkle and his wedding, his honeymoon and holiday. Repeatedly nouns were missed out, so when read to the audience they, in turn, would fill in the blanks reading off a set of cards with words such as "a bucket of flop doodle" "five live herrings" and the like.
It was hilarious. I've recently revived it with my own kids who find it just as funny. Occasionally I've thought of ripping it off and relaunching it.
Well, conceptually at least, I've been beaten to it by long time collaborator Nat Gertler. With his The Most ADJECTIVE Romance Comics Ever in which a fifties-style romance comic has been recreated, with missing words, allowing an audience to fill them in with hilarious consequences.
Nat writes,
The game can be played in a group of two or more, with one player calling out the word types for other players to suggest words for. It can also be played solo, as the book includes a form for each story, listing all of the need word types so that you can choose your words without knowing the context. You then just copy your choices into the story to get the end result. (The form can also be used by two players who want to play without disturbing the other folks in the monastery or asylum.)
Romance to start, I'm sure there will be more to come, but it's well timed for a certain occasion in two weeks. Not being widely distributed, it can be bought on Amazon and copies can be ordered by retailers from About Comics just in time…
