Wake Up And Draw! A New Event To Honor Kirby And Raise Money For The Hero Initiative
The Hero Initiative has come up with a way to celebrate Jack Kirby's 96th birthday by recruiting 40 artists to Wake Up And Draw! Each artist will celebrate the day by sending a "birthday card to Jack". The artists will show their project by tweeting the progress with the hashtag: #WakeUpAndDraw. A gallery of the completed work will be available on-line at ComicArtFans.com and the originals will be auctioned off at a later date to raise money for the charity.
The Hero Initiative, the charitable organization dedicated to helping veteran comic creators in medical or financial need, is working with the Kirby4Heroes campaign founded by Jillian Kirby, Jack's granddaughter. Some retailers have decided to hosting birthday parties for Jack, auction off original art and other activities in honor of the program. The idea of the annual event is to increase participation as it builds towards Jack's 100th birthday in 2017.
