What Humanoids Will Be Publishing – And What They Won't Be
The folks at Eurocomics bumped into Humanoids at San Diego Comic Con. As well as getting a from-the-horse's-mouth explanation of the current state of Moebius licences, they got some clarification on the English publication plans for titles already being published by them in French.
Here's what we know. First about Moebius
Humanoids controls the worldwide publication rights to all the books created by Mœbius and Alejandro Jodorowsky, and the same applies to the audiovisual rights.
Humanoids also controls the worldwide publication rights to the Mœbius classics, including "The Airtight Garage,""Arzach," etc. EXCEPT for the English and Japanese languages.
The decision about the publication of these classics in English and Japanese has to be made by the "Mœbius Estate." We are not breaking any secret here in saying that there is a legal battle going on between the members of this estate.
Humanoids is not part of this battle, and our only intention is for the amazing work of the great Jean "Mœbius" Giraud to be available to as many people as possible.
Mandalay. A series drawn by popular American artist Butch Guice, to be completed soon with a 4th and final volume by Mexican artist Gallur.
A deluxe oversized HC edition collecting all four books this November, and a regular sized softcover trade in 2016.
Balkans Arena. A thriller based on actual events originally conceived by Darko Macan.
We will release a deluxe oversized HC edition this October, and a regular sized softcover trade in 2016.
Chaland Classics Some classic titles by this great author have been recently reprinted in France, but it doesn't look like you have intentions of picking them up.
We are happy to announce that we will be releasing the complete "Freddy Lombard" in a regular sized HC this fall.
(UPDATE: November)
Stephane Clement by Ceppi
A long running adventure series now collected in big omnibus format.
Not in our plans so far.
Total Incal A gigantic slipcased set containing the whole 3 books: The Incal, Before The Incal and Final Incal.
The slipcase and its content was sold out in France within a few weeks, but we don't plan to release the same in the US for the time being, namely because the deluxe oversized editions of all three books were so limited, only a handful of fans have them all.
Bouncer and White Lama post-Humanoids. These two Jodorowsky-penned series are being continued in France by Éditions Glénat BD. Is there any remote chance that Humanoids could acquire the rights to keep publishing these new chapters in English?
Not in our plans.
Ardor. A post-apocalyptic classic by the Varenne Brothers.
"Ardeur" is truly a masterpiece by the French Varenne brothers. When the first pages were published, at the end of the 1970s, it was a shock to many. "Ardeur" went on to deeply influence a generation of creators. This said, this incredibly nice and thick book (500 pages) would probably be a hard sell in English and we are at this point reluctant to try.
