Flow Like Water Combo: A Quick Review Of 'Absolver'

Absolver is an action RPG game where you play the role as a would-be fighter who is exploring a ruined city called Adal, with the mission of proving your worthiness and joining the small group of peacekeepers who monitor the land. As you make your way from area to area, you're given small pieces of the story that give reason and purpose to your character being here and what they are trying to achieve.

A lot of the game is based on the combat, which is pretty well done as they almost look like pre-planned fight scenes. As you make your way through fights, you'll learn new moves that are added to your combat deck. You can create new combos from these moves as long as you dodge them and win the fight you dodged them in, which you can then chain together as a set of four moves to use later on. Basically, you're building your own fighting style based upon fallen foes, which is a badass concept when you think of the multiple chains you could create in the game. You can even pick up attacks from weapons, get new stances, healing abilities and more as you go.

The downside to all this is that there's no grand explanation of what works best with what, and you're only given subtle hints as to what you can do and how things fit together. It also becomes a time-consuming process to get every move from bosses and other high-profile enemies. You'll also discover the best way to play the game is to go with two more people and vanquish enemies quickly as they can pile up and become a nuisance, especially if you decide to run from them to get some distance and end up walking into more enemies along the way.

I really enjoyed Absolver to a point, and that point came when the story ended on the same day I picked up the game. It's way short and makes me feel like there could have been so much more here. I have no idea what plans they might have had in mind going forward, but its clear that this is a game that should have been greater and just wasn't. If you enjoy a quick adventure, this may be for you. But if you prefer to feel like you got your money's worth, might be best to step back from this one.
