If Mad Max Had An '80s Cartoon: A Quick Review Of 'Auto Age: Standoff'
Auto Age: Standoff is an online multiplayer derby shooter where you take control of one of a dozen different cars and fight other players in a duel to the death. The game is essentially old '80s cartoons married with Mad Max and demolition derby aspects to give you a free for all in the desert with specialty cars loaded with mounted weapons. The process is simple: set up a game or choose one of the rooms online, pick your favorite car with pre-built in weaponry, hit the battlefield and do your best to survive.
There is a tutorial that has a cartoon adventure attached to it but don't mistake this for a campaign of any kind, it is super brief and only teaches you what you need to know to operate any kind of car in the game. It can't help you win or give you any kind of super bonus to give you an advantage. Now, all that being said, the game does look spectacular for what it is, with cars and worlds that jump out like a cartoon and destruction that feels fun and alive. You'll need to get used to the control scheme as it can feel sluggish at times, but once you pass that learning curve, it's smooth sailing.
I enjoyed what Auto Age: Standoff had to offer, but it also feels like there could have been more. Beyond the combat and the tutorial, there isn't much else to the game. This is, by definition, quick and stupid fun for people who love to race around and shoot stuff up. If you were hoping for more depth, you'll need to look elsewhere. But if you want something you can dive into for fun without thinking about it, this is your title!
