For Better Or Worse This Time?: A Quick Review Of 'Dishonored: Death Of The Outsider'

Nearly a year since Dishonored 2 came out, we have a sequel to the game in the form of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. The game throws you back into the fray immediately following the events of the last game as you command the role of Billie Lurk. Your new mission is to get revenge on The Outsider along with your mentor by finding a mystical object that will bring an end to The Outsider and possibly end all of the horrors you've been dealing with since the first Dishonored game.

The fighting mechanics in the game have been cleaned up a bit since the last title, giving it more of a fluid movement than the occasionally disjointed combo system. You also get an ability called Displace which basically acts as a teleporter system where you cast an image of yourself in a location you can see and instantly go there. Dark Vision is gone but instead has been replaced with Foresight, which allows you to see around the area as if you were a ghost, freezing everything in place as you can put down markers and figure out the best way around. This entire system, by far, is an improvement on the game and should stay for future installments.

There is one more ability that allows you to steal someone's face and walk around, but it costs too much energy to use and should be cast sparingly. You'll enjoy playing with all of these for a while, but the game doesn't add anything new to them as you move on, so the joy behind them can die quickly. The game will take you roughly 7-10 hours to complete, which you can do as a psychopath murderer or a pacifist, as the game has eliminated any bonuses to doing it either way. The game itself looks amazing, but it feels as if the world is more interesting than the people within it. Many of those you come to take items from or kill seem bland and uninteresting beyond the title they've been given. Depending on how you feel about the series, that's either an annoyance or perfectly normal.

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is an awesome game to play, but my 2016 eyes can still see the awesome gameplay that Dishonored 2 has and recognizes that this just isn't up to snuff. Yeah, there are great things in this version, but they don't quite match what we've already seen and been given. There are great possibilities for this game that just feel like they were passed over in order to capitalize on the previous game, and that's a shame considering the potential the last one left. It's great, but not as great as it could have been.
