Epic Mickey Creator Responds to Disney's Comments About Past Games
Earlier this week, when asked about Disney's relationship with Electronic Arts, Disney chairman and CEO Robert Iger made a couple comments that didn't sit well with some. The short version of this Variety piece is that they're happy with EA, even with the issues that came up with Star Wars: Battlefront II, and that Disney as a company has "never managed to demonstrate much skill on the publishing side of games." Essentially saying that the work they've done over the years wasn't that great.
That caught the attention of Warren Spector, longtime industry creator and current Director of OtherSide Entertainment's Austin office, who at one point worked for Disney at Junction Point Studios. Spector is the creator of Epic Mickey, a 2010 platformer for the Wii that received pretty favorable reviews at the time. Spector had his own thoughts on games Disney previously published.
I myself played Epic Mickey back when it came out and loved it for the innovation of the paint mechanics and how the story managed to bring a section of Disney back to life that most fans had forgotten or never knew existed with Oswald. Its a shame the company thinks it had no good games in the past, and I'm sure there are legions of game developers who would like to take up residence in their studios to prove them wrong.
