Nintendo Services For Wii U & 3DS Unintentionally Went Offline

It appears Nintendo had a service interruption for both the 3DS and Wii U ahead of their planned schedule to shut them down in March 2024.

Article Summary

  • Nintendo's Wii U & 3DS services faced unexpected outages before their 2024 end date.
  • Players were unable to access online features and download content they owned.
  • Pretendo, an open-source network, reported and clarified the service interruption.
  • Some Nintendo services restored, raising awareness of the impending shutdown.

Multiple players have pointed out that Nintendo has apparently lost certain services for both the Wii U and the 3DS before their planned end date. For those of you who are not aware, the company announced a few months ago that both platforms would be ceasing online operations in March 2024. But until then, players were still free to download all of the content that they already bought and be able to play games online with other players who happened to have those consoles and games. So, in theory, if you and your friends all still own the original Mario Kart 8, you should have been able to play the game together up until that time. However, that seems to not be the case, as multiple sources have tested the servers over the past week and have found out that everything suffered some kind of outage.

The leading source of the news comes from Pretendo, who tout themselves as an "open-source Nintendo Network replacement" as they are attempting to be an alternative connection for players once the services are officially offline. They originally posted a blog letting people know of the service interruption, but then a week later clarified the situation, letting players know that they had no idea if the shutdown of the service was intentional or not. It was later acknowledged that some services had been restored to normal, but that not everything was back as it was as of December 26.

Regardless of what happened or how it happened, it was a quick wake-up call for everyone who is still gaming on both systems that services will be going away, and there's very little time for everyone to enjoy what time they have left. We'll see if Nintendo addresses everything after the New Year starts, but it may just be a matter of the company not being attentive to it since it's going away anyway.
