Review: The Deck Of Many Monsters 4
A while ago we had reviewed several decks from Hitpoint Press from their awesome card series called The Deck Of Many. These are reference cards for people playing Fifth Edition Dungeons & Dragons so that they had easy reference cards to things happening in the game for several instances. The latest set of cards to come across our desk for review from these guys is the fourth pack of Monster cards. We cracked back the plastic to check them out and see how these hold up to the previous sets.
This set seems to have a focus on creatures you are more likely to run into in the wild or in some very deep dark caves. As you can see from the selection below, you get things like a Werewolf, Clay Golem, Doppelganger, Griffon, Rakshasa, a Manticore, and more. All of them drawn up with their own unique artwork to give the creature character as you look at them and picture fighting against them. Sure, they got a little more of an animated look to them than you would see in a D&D book, but that's okay, because sometimes you need variety.
All of these creatures have their complete stats loaded on the back, as noted in previous editions of the cards from this particular set. DM's will have the ability to see all of their HP, strengths, weaknesses, resistance elements, spells, etc. It's a good way for a DM to have everything they need at the ready when called on, rather than flipping through the book on a moment's notice. Plus, if you happen to have a DM's screen where you can hold cards up, it makes it great for the players to see what they're fighting as you can see the stats right in front of your face.
One of the more interesting aspects is that the developers at Hitpoint Press love to throw in some random cards that are totally original and are there to add a little variety if you so desire. One of those cares, as you see here, is "A Stranger Thing". Made up to look like Eleven from Stranger Things, but with tentacles on the side to give you that creepy feeling as you're not sure how to handle it. Seeing this was a fun surprised. The game also comes with five blank cards for you to create your own creatures both in design and in effects on the back.
Overall, The Deck Of Many Monsters 4 is a nice addition to the set, no real complaints from us as it adds in several new creatures to the decks for you home gaming needs. Here's hoping they add more sets like this because the key's the limit when it comes to all the different decks they could do.
