We Played GTFO: Final Edition With The Final Rundown

We had a chance to play GTFO: Final Edition with some of the devs from 10 Chambers, as we explored the final rundown with them.

Article Summary

  • Played GTFO: Final Edition's Rundown 8 with 10 Chambers devs, showcasing new challenges.
  • Game upgrades include enhanced graphics and a clearer storyline direction towards a conclusion.
  • Tested early and late missions, utilizing diverse weaponry and strategic teamwork against foes.
  • Despite not completing, Rundown 8 solidifies GTFO's legacy before 10 Chambers' next project.

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of being invited by the team of 10 Chambers to try out the final rundown for GTFO: Final Edition. We attended a special session with a mix of game journalists and content creators to try out the latest addition to the game, Rundown 8, which serves as the final major addition to the game. Admittedly, we hadn't played GTFO in a while, as it had become harder to find a group who wanted to go through what I would call one of the hardest FPS titles out there that doesn't get its due sometimes. The game is great and intense, but it's also not for the weak, as it will challenge you to be stealthy and calculated as you explore a never-ending row of facility hallways and labs buried deep within caverns that you and your team must explore to uncover what's been going on down here. Thankfully, we had dev support for this one, literally, as members of the 10 Chambers team joined us to show off the new content.

We got to play two different sections in this preview: one of the earlier missions and then one of the harder missions that come along later in the game. At the time, the team was hyping up that they had issues with the second one, so the bar was already high for us entering the game. First off, we suited up and picked out the weapons we wanted to work with. I went for some stuff I wasn't too experienced with and wanted to try out, which included the Bat as my melee weapon, simply because it looked cool, and I have always used the Sledgehammer. I also went with the Shotgun my first time in because the previous sessions I had to this really put me in up-close combat, so I decided to go with a favorite that would keep them at bay in a single blast.

The first thing I noticed is that the graphics have definitely been given a greater upgrade, and the game's storyline now seems to have an idea of where it wants to conclude. Previously, when we encountered pieces of the story, it felt like an episode of Lost where we got a piece that made no sense and never would until the next Rundown came out. Rundown 8 absolutely feels like they know where GTFO is going to close everything out, so some of it makes more sense. The mission felt like riding a bike again as I quickly got back into the groove of working as a team to find each location we needed to go to and seek out the specific items or information we needed to get to the end of the mission, all while taking out the Sleepers one by one until an emergency left us with no choice. There were some close calls, especially when dealing with a couple of Brutes, where I realized the shotgun just wasn't going to cut it.

The second mission, which was longer and a lot deadlier, was the one the devs were dreading but were confident we could pull off. I changed it up by going back to my Sledgehammer and then traded my shotgun for the PDW, which came with an inferred mount so I could see and hit incoming targets from afar. This one went off mostly without a hitch as we were gathering audio files and tech. One of the items sent us into what felt like a parallel world where the map immediately changed, and we had to deal with a new set of circumstances. And once they were done, we were sent back to where we started. It threw me off for a bit until we ran down the mission again. A lot of this level was working with the team to fend off hordes who heard the alarms on certain doors and wanted to come at us. So, we spent a few different times setting up automatic turrets and sealing doors shut with foam to keep them out.

Unfortunately, due to the length of the mission, we ran out of time before being able to complete them. But we had made it pretty far without dying. It's been a few weeks since Rundown 8 was released, and I can say with full confidence it feels like a fitting end to GTFO. Especially after seeing where the game originated years ago and experiencing different Rundowns since then. The team will be moving onto their new project, Den Of Wolves, so there probably won't be any last-minute additions aside from some patches and bug fixes. But I hope the team has one last surprise left beyond this as a treat to the fans before they close the door on this one. But even if they don't, it's worth your time to get your friends together and experience one last difficult challenge together.
