The Happytime Murders seems to know that its premise is so over the top it's going to have to work pretty hard to get people into the theater. That means a good marketing campaign and while there hasn't been a ton of it the stuff that we have seen has been pretty good. For example; this trailer is a "for your consideration" trailer with what look like reactions from twitter instead of lines from critics.
Then we have two TV spots. The first one shows main puppet character Phil Phillips, voiced by Bill Barretta, practicing his catchphrases.
Next we have a PSA for "syrup" which in this world sounds like a drug of some sort.
STX Entertainment, the studio releasing the film, even went so far as to have a a pop-up speak easy decorated like the world of The Happytime Murders complete with stripper puppets and signature cocktails like the DTF or the Down to Fluff.
Go big or go home. They decided to re-open the speakeasy for three more dates, August 17th-August 19th, in LA. Tickets are free so if you're in the LA area and over 21 it might be worth checking out. And if you do post pictures and @ me on twitter. I want to see this thing.
Summary: When the puppet cast of an '80s children's TV show begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case.
The Happytime Murders, directed by Brian Henson, stars Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Leslie David Baker, Bill Barretta, and Elizabeth Banks. It will be released on August 24th.
