Andrew Garfield Didn't Feel Represented By Amazing Spider-Man Movies
As 2017 kicks off, former Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield has continued his Amazing Spider-Man bashing press tour, with no signs of slowing down. Back in October, Garfield expressed excitement that Spider-Man's movie adaptations were back under the guidance of Marvel. In November, he revealed that he was heartbroken over how bad Sony's Amazing Spider-Man films were. In December, Garfield said that he struggled playing Spider-Man in the abysmal films. And in the first Andrew Garfield Spider-Man bashing of the new year, Garfield has told THR in a podcast that he didn't feel represented by the Amazing Spider-Man films.
According to the interview, Garfield agreed to play Spider-Man without seeing any scripts, and that the "corporate mind-set" of the movies grated on him terribly. As a result, Garfield didn't feel "represented" in the films.
I had to fight really, really hard to make sure that the character was honored and that we were offering something really fun, entertaining and also moving and complex and deep for all the young boys and girls that want to see their favorite superhero. So many beautiful things came out of that. I met someone that remains incredibly important to my life on that — you can fill in the blanks on who that is. But the difference between how I felt when Never Let Me Go and The Social Network were coming out and how I felt with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was that I didn't feel represented. I was feeling very represented by those other two films, and with The Amazing Spider-Man stuff I didn't feel like that was my work up there, in a weird way. It felt like a semblance of it or kind of a shade of it, but ultimately I felt it was enshrouded in that filter.
It seems like starring in such awful Spider-Man movies has had a profound, scarring effect on Garfield's life. We hope that, as more time passes, Garfield is able to come to grips with making some of the worst Spider-Man movies since Tobey Maguire.
