Bob Iger Talks Integrating the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe

When it was announced that Disney would be buying Fox one of the first things fans asked was what is going to happen to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four? Those are the two Marvel properties that Fox still owned and those two properties being unavailable to Marvel Studios is one of the reasons they had to take a chance on C-list [at the time] characters like Iron Man and Thor. Now that Marvel is getting those characters back fans have been wondering what they plan to do with these characters. The X-Men in particular have been doing their own thing, both in movies currently and usually in the comics, for years now.

The Hollywood Reporter recently did an interview with with Disney CEO Bob Iger and was asked if Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios would be taking over the Fox properties.

I think it only makes sense. I want to be careful here because of what's been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know. It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn't be two Marvels.

When asked if that meant Deadpool, a character that doesn't really line up with the family friendly image of the MCU, would be joining the Avengers Iger didn't have a comment one way or another.

Kevin's got a lot of ideas. I'm not suggesting that's one of them. But who knows?

So where does this leave the currently in production movies? Well it means that Fox isn't going to rush another terrible Fantastic Four movie out anytime soon. As for the X-Men it's still a little unclear. Fox has announced a lot of projects including X-Force and movies based on Kitty Pryde and Multiple Man. Whether or not those projects will be making the jump to Marvel is unclear.

The Fantastic Four have always felt like they could easily belong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but X-Men could stand on their own. The X-Men could be the first time Marvel decides to do the alternate universe thing and maybe do a universe crossover for Avengers vs. X-Men someday. DC and Warner Bros. got TV audiences to wrap their heads around multiple universes; it stands to reason Marvel and movie audiences could do the same. For now these things are still a few years in the making and we'll have to see what Disney and Marvel decide to do.
