"Bond 25": Rami Malek Talks His Conditions to Play a Terrorist
When it comes to being a person of color and playing a terrorist there is a very fine line to walk. Actor Rami Malek has taken on the role as the main bad guy in Bond 25 but he had some stipulations about taking on the role so it wasn't cliche. Malek spoke to The Mirror about his conditions for taking on the role.
"It's a great character and I'm very excited," Rami, who is of Egyptian descent, is quoted as saying. "But that was one thing that I discussed with Cary. I said, 'We cannot identify him with any act of terrorism reflecting an ideology or a religion. That's not something I would entertain, so if that is why I am your choice then you can count me out.' But that was clearly not his vision. So he's a very different kind of terrorist."
Malek went on to say that it was the clever script that drew him to the role and the weight of responsibility in playing a villain in a Bond movie.
"It's another extremely clever script from the people who have figured out exactly what people want in those movies," he said. "But I feel a substantial weight on my shoulders. I mean, Bond is something that we all grow up with."
Bond 25 is currently in production and we should learn more about the movie in the coming months. There have been a lot of behind-the-scenes issues with this production so MGM is likely going to spend the entire lead up to this movie in damage control mode.
Summary: Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.
