Boots Riley's 'Sorry to Bother You' is Bizarre and Brilliant
The Bay Area is representing hard this weekend at the box office. In addition to Marvel's San Francisco-set Ant-Man and The Wasp there's also a quieter and potentially more surreal film set across the bridge. Boots Riley's Oakland-set Sorry to Bother You begins its theatrical journey this weekend, and I highly recommend checking it out.
It's one of the most original (and yes, bizarre) films I've seen in quite a while. I suggest going into it with an open mind, but also knowing as little as possible about it beforehand. I will say it explores themes of cultural and racial identity, socio-economic issues, and the power that comes along with it.
There are several visual storytelling moments that had me enamored and enraptured. The cast is also stellar, diverse, and representative of the Bay Area I know and love. The film stars Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta, Get Out), Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok, Westworld), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Okja), Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Deadpool 2), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon, The Color Purple), and Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name, The Social Network).
It also features killer tunes from Janelle Monae, Killer Mike, Stanfield, and Oakland's own E-40 and the Tune-Yards. Riley (for those unfamiliar) gained fame as the lead vocalist of The Coup.
