Captain Marvel Will Show Agent Coulson's SHIELD Origin

When Marvel Studios announced that Captain Marvel would be taking place in the '90s, fans began to wonder what kind of familiar faces would appear. We were pleased to hear that Samuel L. Jackson would be making an appearance, but fans were possibly even more excited when we heard that Clark Gregg would be returning to the role of Phil Coulson. Coulson died in the first Avengers movie but was brought back to life for Agents of SHIELD. He hasn't appeared in a movie since. Gregg recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what this version of the character is going to look like.

"So we're seeing a version of Coulson that's eight or nine, ten years, before Iron Man. He's a bit of a new guy in S.H.I.E.L.D." Gregg says. "He's a lot younger. It's the earliest we will have seen him, so when he says, 'Mr. Stark, this isn't my first rodeo' in Iron Man, this is maybe the rodeo he's talking about."

Gregg went on to praise his Marvel co-stars and the script for the production and how much he loves star Brie Larson's work.

I love Brie Larson and I've always liked her and I think her work is beautiful. And then they put together this cast with Ben Mendelsohn and Jude Law and Sam Jackson and a really terrific script so I was thrilled. The fact that it's set in the 90's and I had a feeling that the soundtrack is going to be as soon as it seems like it's going to be. That was just a bonus.

It sounds like they are leaning into the time period, which is going to be a lot of fun. If they play their cards right, we could have another fantastic soundtrack on our hands that isn't Guardians of the Galaxy. We don't know how big of a role Coulson is going to play in Captain Marvel, but it's going to be fun to see a young version of this character running around — and it's always good to see Gregg in a Marvel property.

Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
