Christoper Nolan on Zack Snyder's "Love for the Potential of Cinema"

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan says, "When you watch a Zack Snyder film, you see and feel his love for the potential of cinema."

Article Summary

  • Christopher Nolan praises Zack Snyder's cinematic passion in a new profile.
  • Despite mixed reactions, Snyder's Rebel Moon showcases creative freedom on Netflix.
  • Nolan cites influence of Snyder in contemporary superhero and sci-fi films.
  • The two directors share a history, with Nolan producing for Snyder previously.

While the reviews and early streaming numbers for Rebel Moon are not exactly trending positive (to put it lightly), it is a big deal that a big streaming service like Netflix was willing to give someone like Zack Snyder a blank check to make a film based on original IP with little to no oversight or micromanaging. So there have been plenty of massive articles focusing on Snyder and the journey he had been on to get to this point, and one of the outlets that did a profile on Snyder was The Atlantic. They got the chance to speak to Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, who has worked with Snyder as a producer before, and the two seem to have remained close over the years.

"There's no superhero science-fiction film coming out these days where I don't see some influence of Zack," Christopher Nolan, the Oppenheimer director who has worked with Snyder as a producer, told me. "When you watch a Zack Snyder film, you see and feel his love for the potential of cinema. The potential of it to be fantastical, to be heightened in its reality, but to move you and to excite you."

One of the things that have made disliking the last decade or so of Snyder's work from someone who has defended him in the past (love Watchmen and Sucker Punch) is that he really seems to love what he does. It's clear he loves making movies and adores every step of the process. There is a reason he has drawn the kind of dedication from cast members he has in the past, and no one has spoken an ill word about him. As Nolan said, you can feel his love for cinema in every frame. However, it does appear that writing is not Snyder's strongest suit, and there is nothing wrong with that. We all have weaknesses, and there is nothing wrong with admitting them. If Snyder could hand his bare-bones idea to better screenwriters, his projects would likely improve. Maybe we'll see that after the second part of Rebel Moon comes out.

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire: Summary, Cast List, Release Date

A new universe awaits on Netflix starting December 22. From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, a 2-part movie event decades in the making. After crash landing on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a stranger with a mysterious past, begins a new life among a peaceful settlement of farmers. But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher) — leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Motherworld.

Tasked with finding fighters who would risk their lives to defend the people of Veldt, Kora, and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a tenderhearted farmer naive in the realities of war, journey to different worlds in search of the Bloodaxes and assemble a small band of warriors who share a common need for redemption along the way: Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a pilot and gun for hire; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a legendary commander; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a master swordswoman; Tarak (Staz Nair), a captive with a regal past; and Milius (E. Duffy), a resistance fighter. Back on Veldt, Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins), an ancient mechanized protector hiding in the wings, awakens with a new purpose. But the newly formed revolutionaries must learn to trust each other and fight as one before the armies of the Motherworld come to destroy them all.
