Fox Snares Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
With Harry Potter set to take a step back from the limelight this year, studios would be forgiven for seeking alternate worlds to entertain young viewers and their families. Last night, Deadline reports, a deal was struck between 20th Century Fox and Peter Chernin Entertainment for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Briggs.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, competition between studios was heated, with Disney, Fox, MGM, paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. all bidding for control of the fantasy novel.
Although the book won't be published until 7 June, it has attracted attention for 'its combination of super powers, dark humor, spooky tone and heart'. It tells the tale of a 16-year-old boy who is able to revisit the lost island of his grandfather, now dead. Off the coast of Wales, this is an island of monsters, ruined orphanages and empowered children where the boy's goal is to rescue the other children who are hidden there, away from fearsome beasts.
Ransom Briggs' role in any screen adaptation is not yet known. But with a plot like that, any forthcoming details will be leapt upon.
