Frank Grillo Has Joined the Cast of the Hitman's Bodyguard 2
Sometimes, proper timing is the difference between a movie doing well and a movie crashing and burning. That can mean something like making sure you aren't getting released the same weekend as a major blockbuster that will bury you at the box office. Sometimes, a movie just gets lucky and that was the case for The Hitman's Bodyguard in August of 2017. The movie came out during some of the slowest weeks of the year in terms of movie releases so with no where else to go they went to go see the mediocre comedy from Lionsgate. It was far from a smash hit, bringing in $176 million at the worldwide box office, but winning three weekends in a row is a good look so we're getting a sequel. According to Variety> Frank Grillo has signed onto the picture with cast members Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Selma Hayek all set to return.
Patrick Hughes will direct again from a script by Tom O'Connor. The Lionsgate sequel follows bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds), who's enlisted by Jackson and Hayek's characters to join them on a mission along the Amalfi Coast. Production is expected to start in March. Grillo is expected to play an Interpol agent who needs Reynolds, Jackson, and Hayek's help to prevent a cyber attack in Europe.
We don't have any sort of release date but a March production start date could point to a late 2019 or early 2020 release date from Lionsgate. They have a presentation at CinemaCon in April so perhaps we'll learn some more information from that. At the present time, we don't know much else and the box office will determine whether or not anyone asked for this particular sequel.
