Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Moves Up 2 Weeks, Mickey 17 Delayed

Warner Bros. Discovery has removed Mickey 17 from the release schedule and moved up Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has moved up two weeks.

Earlier today, Sony Pictures shifted the release date of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and now it is Warner Bros. Discovery's turn to do a little release date shifting. The release date shift isn't exactly good news for Ghostbusters, though, because, initially, the film had to compete with Mickey 17 in its second week. Those two films are likely shooting for mostly different audiences, though, so that probably wouldn't be a problem. However, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Warner Bros. Discovery has removed Mickey 17 from the release schedule because of strike delays getting in the way of finishing the movie. With an open release date, Warner Bros. shifted Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire up two weeks, so the film is now opening on March 29th instead of April 12th.

There is a joke to be made about two films coming out within a week of each other that both have "empire" in the name. Something about there only being room enough for one empire, we'll workshop it. The MonsterVerse hype is trending pretty positively these days, with the unrelated but still awesome Godzilla Minus One releasing last month and Monarch on AppleTV. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will likely decide whether the MonsterVerse continues, considering the performance of the last two films, so no pressure.
