Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Shifts Its Release Date Up A Week

Sony Pictures has shifted the release date of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire a week, moving it from March 29th to March 22nd.

Article Summary

  • Sony resets Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire release from March 29 to a week earlier on March 22, 2024.
  • Avoiding a clash with Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17, Sony aims for a clearer box office run.
  • Director Gil Kenan teases a new mythology for the Ghostbusters legacy in the upcoming movie.
  • With a blend of new and returning cast, anticipation builds for the next Ghostbusters chapter.

Another day, another release date gets shifted so it can open under the best possible conditions. It's really not that surprising that studios are trying to give all of their movies the best opportunities at the box office, considering the pandemic and the strikes kneecapping some productions in many different ways. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is another in a long line that is shifting its release date just a little. In this case, according to Deadline, the release date is moving a whole week from March 29th to March 22nd. That has its pluses and its mines. It puts the film closer to the early March releases that have the potential to have legs like Dune: Part Two or Kung Fu Panda 4. However, it also means that it won't be opening opposite Mickey 17, the highly anticipated new film from Academy Award winner Bong Joon Ho, which features an impressive cast of Robert Pattinson, Steve Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. While those two films are likely courting different audiences between that cast and how massive Parasite was, we don't blame them for wanting to put some distance between the two films.

Not much is known about Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire at the moment. The teaser trailer isn't telling us much, and we know that it is bringing in the new and old cast in varying different roles. Director Gil Kenan explained last month that they are creating a new mythology with this new film, saying, "Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to center stage was a natural way to close the book on the past. But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga, so that means we're able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology. And that's thrilling as a storyteller because there are all-new and terrifying stakes with fresh visual references to draw on." This movie will be here before we know it, so Sony Pictures will likely start pushing it within the next couple of weeks.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire: Summary, Cast List, Release Date

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who've developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters, new and old, must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, directed by Gil Kenan, stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O'Connor, Logan Kim, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts. It will be released on March 22, 2024.
